Besides his soccer interest, Lum Kar Wai’s passion lies in the kitchen. It was in fact by chance that Kar Wai stumbled upon this career path. Beginning in 1985, prior to enlisting for Singapore’s National Service, he started working at Tai Pan Ramada Hotel, which is the current established Allson Hotel. At the age of 18 he got a glimpse into the exciting and intriguing world of food preparation when he was helping out in the cold kitchen. From that moment onwards, there was no turning back for him.

Immediately after National Service, Kar Wai started on his culinary journey, working with numerous well established names in the F&B industry like Movenpick Restaurant of Switzerland and Angus Steakhouse. Thereafter, he moved on to join Esmirada Chijmes before helming the kitchen at Pizzeria Giardino as its Executive Chef in 2004. Since heading the restaurant, he has brought it to new heights by improving the menu and introducing certain of his signature dishes like Salsiccia Piccante Pizza, Sant’Agata Pizza, and Spaghetti Pescatore.
